Hey that’s my car, it’s a Protege5! It looks like a good amount of thought went into installing that steering wheel, considering its actually on center and has decoration.

Probably better than the pair of vise grips my brother used to use as a steering wheel... on a full size Dodge Camper Van from the 60's.

According to this report , it was a frying pan, but I don’t see a handle. (Maybe it was cut off?)

I’m more worried about how it’s attached than I am about the lack of an airbag. Are those wheels supposed to be splined, or keyed to the shaft?

That sounds like a big can of nope right there. Steering loss while driving is the scariest thing I can think of. It scares me more than unintended acceleration or brake failure.
